If you would like your child to get a good education, and to succeed in college and beyond I would recommend you to send your child here. But, I don't know about sending my second child there, because the principal doesn't know what she's doing. The counselors are never there, the people never answer the phone, they lie to you about what your children do in the school, you never find anyone there! There are few teachers there, and one of my children who has been there for three years, hasn't had an english teacher for her sophomore year! As a parent, I don't recommend anyone to put their child into Renaissance. The teachers don't even dress properly to educate the students so they can be respected! With the help of her teachers, and hard work, my daughter received 4's and 5's on AP exams, and was accepted to two of the top schools in the country. As far as administration goes, MI has made it very difficult for all administrators to effectively deal with any school's unique issues. Excellence in academics has always been the main focus, and it's great that students have an opportunity to excel in sports, music, and dance as well. State champs in Basketball and Track. Some teachers care about student growth however, the administrations care more about the reputation than education. The school is no longer what it used to be. The class of 2004 destroyed to school's standards and year by year the school becomes more like the average neighboorhood school. The administration is a travesty. The last great principal there was Dr. Hamilton. After she left the school fell apart. High academic standards are a big joke now. The focus is on the male sports teams, mainly basketball and the losing football team. The teachers are awful. In each department there may be two teachers that actually teach and put effort in helping the students achieve their potential. I went to this school because I had heard so many positive things about it but when I got there I was sadly disappointed. I was well prepared for my college courses thanks to the deidcated and hard working teachers that I encountered at Renaissance. My colleges classes at Howard University were simply a breeze freshamn year, most of which I had already taken or experienced at Renaissance. I maintained a 3.6 gpa at Renaissance, and its needless to say its still the same here at Howard University. Among others, Mr. Watts, Ms. Akylah, Senora Hawthorne, Ms. Davis, Ms. Philpot, and Ms. Rowley were among my favorite tecahers. In each of their classes I was taught a great deal of information about the presiding subjects and always felt as if I truely understood the material. The administrative staff are doing there best. We all know that the world is in a state of chaos right now. The students are not what they use to be. However, the staff do their best to keep all students focused and on track. Renaissance teachers are the best, there are very few lacking teachers. For those of you out there with negative things to say about Renaissance, I am going to guess you didn't graduate with the grades you wish you would have. Some people just aren't cut out for the challenge. True enough in the past few years our sports teams have been grabbing alot of attention, GREAT! They are not the main focus though, if you feel that strongly about it, do the research, 92% of our athletes are college bound honor students. If your child has a problem with high standards, discipline or going to one of the nations top college's, then Renaissance is not the place for them. Before I graduated I had full scholarship offers from Stanford University, MSU, U of M, Xavier, Yale, UCLA and NYU to name a few. The teachers are superior in a way that exceeds verbal description. They are not only educators, but mentors. As a parent be prepared to participate in your child's education as well as a lot of homework. I recently graduated in 2004 and as freshman at Columbia University, one of the eight Ivy League schools, I can also honestly say that Renaissance prepared me in more ways than I can think of. I'm in college with a lot of filthy rich students who went to really expensive private schools and grew up in the suburbs and I don't see any difference between myself or other students despite the fact that I grew up in Detroit and went to a public school. This high school definitely prepared me for college life and for the industry which I currently work. During my 4 years of high school, I was exposed to numerous advanced study and college-prep programs that gave me a strong foundation and put me steps ahead of many of my peers at the university level. My high school background allowed me to get my first summer internship in engineering as a college freshman setting the course for future work (and income)! The instructors, some of whom have become life long friends in my adult age, showed a genuine concern for the students well being and accepted nothing but the best from us. It's turning into a sports school. The English department, although many students somehow pass the AP test, lacks teachers. The math department is not much better. But i guess it's okay because the football, basketball, and track teams wins a lot right? The only reason i like renaissance is because of instrumental music. It allows students who are serious about music to really feel what it's like to be a musician. They travel around the world and plan to be in Europe next year. There are some teachers at that school that look and act like they've never taught a day in their lives. The sports and music departments are phenomenal. The sports department has won many titles and championships and the choir which I am apart of has been honored at Princeton and Carnegie Hall and has traveled to Italy and Africa. And also goes on an annual college tour. I have only good things to say about the school despite the many challenges of providing a quality education in a school sytem undergoing the challenges of DPS. I love the school because my daughter is challenged, is demonstrating greater maturity, and feels cared for by the teachers and administrators. I think high school extra-curriculars are important for whole student development. While the administration takes great pride in its traditions of excellence in sports, arts, and other non-academic activities, Renaissance leads the world in the number of African American students passing the Language Arts AP exam and makes a strong showing in other AP classes. Renaissance is a great school considering all the challenges it faces in the DPS system. Teachers are dedicated and helpful, as much as we'd like to say they aren't. There are plenty of interesting and rigorous courses to choose from. The athletic and art departments are world class. There is a plethora of after-school activities to become engaged in. All this without mention of our new, $60 million dollar plus school campus. Everything is state of the art. The only disadvantage is the lack of diversity of the student body. For the first and only report card so far I have been able to receive a grade point average of a 3.7. One thing that I think that this school needs to work on and add to the school is a study hall hour(not lunch time), and also I thnk that the school needs better math teachers. Overall this school is verygood. Renaissance prepared me well for college (Michigan) and even law school (Howard). I received many scholarship offers upon graduating from Renaissance, and many of my former classmates seem to be doing well whenever I run into them. Of course, it is going to be what you and your child make it. I took AP courses while I attended and was involved in the instrumental music program. I recommend taking Ms. Tobin and Mr. Mac if they are still there. The school has gone down a bit since I attended, but it is still one of the best Detroit has to offer. However, nobody or nothing is perfect and Renaissance coulde sure use some work. Yes, it has a leegacy of acheiving higher than most schools but I believe you actually must be there to comment or back that statement up.
