Western International High School Reviews

I am about to become a sophmore at Western high and i have to say this school is the best school that i have ever been to. There are so many different cultures and backgrounds you can learn from. Also the school has a nice scholarship program, and many extra activies. This school is the best in the DPS district. Dont go to cass go to Western

This school is an excellent way to get students to take heed to diversity. i am currently a junior at this school and everyone is so different and has so much to offer! i love Western the most because it is and always will be Different. Noone expects Western to come out on top but they do! We have some of the best Extra Curricular activities in the Dps system, whether it be basketball,Swim and even Robotics!

This school should b similiar to a boys and girls club because the teaching is insuffecient for the grade level and the atmoshphere is horrid!

This school was not the best for me. Western did not explain the importance of ACT's along with SAT's or anything to prepare you for college. I would not recommend this High School for anyone.

Academics here are lacking, evening in the Honors Program. I had to request that teachers give my child more work and they didn't do it. Athletics are very political.

I have been in DPS since the 1st grade and I know personally that the schools put there children first, espically the teachers. This year I am a freshman at Western International High and i am an honors student. This school is just so marvolous. All of the teachers treat you like you were there own, there very cool and understanding, espically when it comes down to serious situations that you need help with. Here I relized that unlike other schools, this school does not have any tolerance for missbehavior. Unlike many schools hey check Identifacation cards, and has school security on every floor. Here they inforce the rules and with three skrikes your out of there. Teachers and staff does no harass you or descriminate aginst you, the treat you innocent and till proven guilty. I really love my school, because its a multi-racial school, full of spanish/english-speaking teens. DPS 4life

This school is great. All the students respond to all forms of rules. 2007 has changed these student and so has the principals! This school rocks!

The level of parental involvement here at Western is very low. Parents do not care about their childs education and we need choir back. the sports teams are excellent except for male football.

I graduated from Western in 2005 and believe that Western is a great school. However, Western does not prepare its students well enough to excel at the University level. I attend U of M (University of Michigan) and have had great success, however I look at my fellow peers and they understand and have been better prepared. I even was an AP/Honors student and have realized that those classes just gave me enough to understand the basics. For the most part Western does offer a great experience aside from the academic aspect.

Western is not the best school to go to. Most students are disruptive and really dont care about thier education. It also prevents other who want thier education from learning. The education you receive here wont prepare you for college, unless your going to commuinty college. I hear way to much complaining about the teachers and other stuff, but the students dont help ethier.

I currently attend western international h.S. And i have been enrolled in this school since the 9th grade. Overall it is a really good high school we dont really have a nerd group that people pick on ,theres really not alot of that type of immature things taking place. There are alot of great programs in the school but the students need more encouragement to be envolved. We could use alot of money donations but we are still a very accomplishing school. Were a very multiracial school and most are all african american. We have a good caring staff at times and sometimes there more childish then a ninth grader.

i attended this school my 9th and half of my 10th grade year at this school it is truly one of the most educating experiences of my life my teachers actually cared if i made it or not and my journalism (absher)english(diez&cooney)science(gracia, harris&enjelonu)spanish (parsons&hiramenek) made such positve influnces on me .i also want my x-cheerteam coach to know she helped me learn that can't is not allowed in my voaculary Sincerely shariel mitchell

My son is currently in 11th grade we came from one of the Catholic schools that closed. He has improved his GPA and has colleges looking at him. Western is the best keep secret in the Detroit Public School system. I would recommend the school to anybody. I have been against DPS for years, but Western changed my mind and I'm tell other parents about our experience.

Western in my opinion is a great school with a caring staff the only flaw is that the school is located in a bad neighborhood with alot of gang activity as far as the school goes all the teachers there try their best to prepare us for college, whether we take advantage of the oppurtunity that's our problem in my opinion the students are the ones that decide whether a school is good or not Ms. Luna and the rest of the staff have definitly made this school one of the best in Detroit.

I graduated from Western in 1999. The quality of the teachers, staff and the student population is extraordinary. I agree with other reviews that there is a lack of some necessary supplies and a shortage of books. With all things considered, I would say that Western is one of the best high schools in Detroit.

Western high is a good school with plenty of scholarship opportunities. That is what I liked when I initially enrolled here. And helpful people such as Mrs. Henry and Mr. Collier and the principal Mrs. Luna want to make sure that their students get ahead and take advantage of the many opportunities that they have. I graduated last year in the top of my class and I 'd just like to say that western is doing a good job in promoting higher education after high school. -Cindy Argueta c/o 04 (Go Western Girls Soccer!)

I go to western and I think that are doing the best that the board of education will allow them to do. How can we be the best when our supplies arent the best. Well thats all for now. tata c/o 08

this school is doing the best they can to provide students with the best education that they deserve. the problem is that the students are not taking advantage of this opportunity. instead of attending classes and doing what they are suppose to do, all the students do is skip and fight. however, there are some students that take advantage of the programs offered to them. students that actually try their best, they graduate well educated and ready for college. the only important thing is for these students that don't try to change their habbits and make school as there number one priority. Western High C/O '04'

I attend Western High, and will, in fact, be entering senior year. I believe Western is doing the best they can with what they have, and for a public school in an area like ours, I am proud to say that we are doing better than other schools in our neighborhood. I take all honors classes, and my teachers are wonderful and know their subject. The lunches are decent, and we have a nice environment. All we lack that suburb schools get is MONEY, and this would be the fualt of the city, not the school.

I graduated from western in 2001... I thought that I was ready for college until I got to Alabama state. Western did not prepare me for college academically. I don't blame it on the teachers but more so the board of education, I feel as if I was deprived of an equal education because I went to a public school centered in the in the middle of violence. From What I here not much has changed. I graduate soon but I shouldn't have to work harder than most of the Students here just because I never took important courses in High school. I love the teachers...but there is not muched offered academic wise.

I think that the school should have better security guards and the teachers should start teaching. Also the grafitti on the walls should be cleaned. Worst of all the school don't get enough money from the Board of Education to support them and their extra curricular activities. How does the Board of Education expect the students to pass when the teachers don't have the necessary supplies to teach. Also the school is low on books and the books that we have are old that they are tearing up and many pages are missing. Also there is some gang writting in them and they may get in trouble for that.

I am really satisfied with the teachers I have this year. They are all on top of their job. I have gone from a 'D' to 'B' in all my classes scince last year. Although I do have some complaints about the Board of Education. Western is in need if suplies and because of this some teachers can't teach. My english teacher has to go out and buy the novels that he wants us to read. The sports at Western do not have sufficient equipment for everyone who wants to play. I beleive that if the board would provide good supplies, western would be one of the top schools in M.I. even the staff says the same thing. I also strongly belive that the school needs a new football coach, and central cooling system.

I love Western! I couldn't imagine going any where else. Its diversity is great and it offers access to so many scholarships!
