King High School Reviews

I am a parent w/ one child in a DPS system and the other in a Charter system. They both have their share of problems. My son is a junior at King H.S. His 1st yr. was confusing, but as time went on it got better. I am happy with his decision of King being his 1st choice. As far as the violence, it can happen anywhere, anytime. I agree it shouldn't happen in schools, but all we can do is pray it doesn't hit home. My son has 3.66 GPA. He has kept his GPA well above a 2.5 since the 9th grade. He plays Varsity Basketball and has since the 9th grade. His coach, as well as others are concerned about his grades and welfare in general and he is enjoying teasing me about being a Pilot, because he loves being a Crusader!

My daughter is currently a sophomore at King and quite honestly there is much to be desired. I want to give the current administration some time to become acclomated to the mess they inherited. I will say more of the staff seem to be a tad bit more professional and courteous than years past. My son just graduated in June with honors from their MSAT program which is the best in the school. Unfortunately the issues that plague King are the same ones that seem to be universal throughout the district. With that being said, this is a school that is supposed to be ranked one of the top 3 in the district where students still have to test to get into certain programs and have to bear the burden of being exclusive within the parameters of a neighborhood school.

My children presently attend King High School I am very disappointed. This school is very unorganized starting with the Principals, Vice-Principals, Secretaries, Teachers, and Security. Lord have mercy for these students they can't help but be confused. They have so many chiefs but no indians. There is lack of communication with the teachers to the parents who are very interested with their childrens' education. I went to several Parent Teacher Conferences through out the 2007-2008 school year this happen to be there first year in high school and they are disappointed in their grades and I am disappointed in the lack of concern from the teachers of my children educational well-being. Parents please pray to the Lord about sending your child (ren) to this school. For my children, this school year it has been a hurtful experience. This is the most disrespectful way to honor a great individual (MLK).

I am a parent of a King high school student. My daugther is in the 9th grade. Everytime i pick her up. There is a fight. On a another occasion there was somebody that pulled a gun on somebody. My child is scared for her saftey. I would not recommend this school because of its violence.

My daughter is a 9th grader at King High school. She is in the MSAT program and also a honor roll student through out school .I pick her up for school each day. There is always fighting going on in and outside of the school. I am very nervous about her getting education there. She doen't feel safe to stand outside to wait for me to pick her up. King has great programs and great intents for students, however what good is good education without a child to live out their dreams.

I've been at King High School for 3 years now. I am currently a junior. Some people only see the bad things about King. Yet they fail to realize the good things at king. Like our extra-curricular activities. I am also in the King Marching Band. We have some great teams like football, basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball, track, etc. If you see the overall of King it's a better positive overall then negative. We're close to the Lifeskills building and we're surrounded by other schools. I feel as if this year will be the best year ever at King.

I believe that if you are not a student or involved parent of King High School, you have no right to make assumptions. I am currently a junior at King and I must say that King students, especially MSAT, are serious about their education. We make the best out of what we have. How dare anyone make accusations or negative remarks toward King's administration. Instead of complaining, why not help? As far as academics, we have excellent teachers. Our teachers do not consider their career as a 'job', but a way of life. The teachers here love what they do. The school is not 'falling apart'. And for the person who made that comment, maybe you need to enroll in an MSAT english class. We DO need more parental involvement. Nonetheless, the student body and faculty at King have a tenacious attitude when it comes to academics. -Amber P

The MSAT Program is doing great to educate its children but the entire school is falling apart mainly thanks to the adminstartion only one or two adminastators are actually doing a good job inside the school while the princepal recently just attemted to pretend to be involved in the schools welfare. King is falling apart and is no longer a top school in Detroit. One good thing about King is its sports team and its extracurricular activites like choir, dance, and drama.

The school has several areas and issues that need immediate resolution. The MSAT program has deteriorated rapidly and needs to have serious restructuring. The children are without proper guidance for the academic future and none of the administrators seem to care. The children, however, are definitely learning that if they don't handle their business, noone else will.

As a incoming senior in the MSAT program at ML King, I feel that this school is well-preparing me for the world ahead. The academia provided at the school works with the child, not against the child. Most of the teachers in the school are dedicated to their jobs, and they work hard to see that we learn and learn effectively. The wide variety of extracurricular activities makes this a well-rounded school. In school, I feel safe that security is doing the best job possible to keep our school safe and away from danger. I would recommend this school to anyone who is willing to attend. The work does get a bit demanding at times, but it is not anything that the student should not be able to handle.

As an allumni of M.L.King I feel that the programs that the school offers are great. I was a part of the athletic programs and did well in academics. I now attend Wayne State University and I feel my high school background has contributed to my 4.0 g.p.a. in college. I would still recommend King to anyone ready to attend high school and seriously thinking of attending college.

I am also as student at King High in the MSAt Program. This is a very academic school that cares about are education. I recommend anyone to come to King High School.

As a student at M.L.King High I feel very satisfied! The teachers are great and you have tons of activities to participate in. I attend the MSAT (Math Science & Appied Technology) program and by attending this particular program, I feel that it will give me a extreme jump-start into my college and potential adult life, making me a people and world oriented person. The security is nice making me feel like I'm at school to learn and not fight constantly. Ultimately I feel like I have made the right decision and it has been one of the best decisions that I have made because I do not regret one moment. KING will be the perfect school for any student pertaining to academics, atletics, and leadership!

M.L.King is a GREAT, family orientated school. The quality of academic prepares students for the collegiate level of student learning. Along with great academics, King also has an outstanding sports program that is known nationally. King has and always will produce great student-athletes. The children there are very much aware that academics comes first, above everything else. If students do what they are suppose to do in the classroom, everything else will fall into place. It has great support from parents and alumni. Safety, as with any other public school, is what you make it. If you look for trouble, you will always find trouble. But if you do what you are suppose to do, everything is all gravy.

Their academic programs are excellent, but the environment is extremly poor. The children from the neighborhood fight all the time. My child feels unsafe. He focuses more on his safety then his education. Not a good environment. Parent

I feel King is an excellent high school, that with a growing alumni/booster population, can rival some of the competing high schools in the suburbs.Everyone knows we are good but we have a chance to be great.
