GESU Center Reviews

I love the school. It is the best place for nurturing with out the outside influences of the world. Morality and love for each other is key. I especially enjoy the parent support from the school and individual parents

after tking my sons to various schools in the area both private and supplemented,I found a happy home at Gesu. They are one family with the common goal of educatining the entire child. Plus you cant beat the class size.

The review from 2004 could not be more wrong. My child has been attending Gesu since Kindergarten, and will be in seventh grade in the fall. Her kindergarten through 4th grade teachers still teach at Gesu, and gave her an excellent foundation that will serve her well throughout her academic life. The fifth, sixth and eighth grade teachers have been there for a few years also. The spirit around Gesu is Christian and family-like, and no student slips through the cracks. Gesu prepares students for high school, and for life.

My child is a 4th grader who transferred to Gesu from Bates Academy, a Detroit Public School for high achievers. The teachers seem to care that my child learns. I can attest to the fact that the curriculum is on the mark. At Bates, the curriculum used is one year past the current grade level. So, my son was doing 4th grade work while in 3rd grade. At Gesu, the coursework is closely aligned to the work he received at Bates. So, I would say that the bar is definitely not set too low. Children need encouragement and nurturing to learn. The school is small and family-like. I am very pleased.

Gesu is a great school to educate a growing mind. This is my child's 2nd year attending and I have seen much progress. Education is very important, but in addition so is self-worth and gaining life experiences to apply this knowledge. The teachers and staff do a very good job on keeping you informed of your child's progress and short comings. When a child looks forward to going to school Learning is much easier.

I love Gesu, my daughter gets the quality education she deserves and the teachers don't have the 'Urban Attitude' like Detroit Public School teachers. They build up students, not tear them down with low self esteem remarks. They teach at Gesu, from the heart. All students learn at GESU!

Gesu School is the best place to educate an elementary school aged child in the city of Detroit. The staff genuinely cares about each and every student and have been known to go far and beyond what most teachers do to help find the best way to educate each and every child in that school. 'Fend for themselves'? Not at all! When a student with special needs comes to Gesu, the staff reacts quickly to find out how to best educate that child and to provide the right person for the job. While this may mean sending the child to another school that has the facilities and programs necessary to help the child, it shows that the staff doesn't just let a child fend for themselves while paying tuition. Gesu teachers care, the administrative staff cares and everyone involved with the school cares!

I love this school! I am not a parent of a student who attends this school. I visited this school because my daughter had a volleyball game to play at Gesu. From the moment I arrived until the moment I left, all I could think of was how much I love the school. The parents, the students, the coaches everyone I came in contact with showed great pride in their school. Go Gesu!

Sounds like some sour grapes to me! Check out the fact that Gesu students go on to attend excellent high schools such as University of Detroit Jesuit, Mercy, Regina and Renaissance. No child at Gesu is 'left to fend for themselves' by any staff member. Drive by after 4 p.m. and see how many teachers are tutoring students who need extra help or are supervising extra curricular activities. The Spanish position has had high turnover due to the fact that the position is funded through the charter system......but staff turnover for the school itself is very low. Teachers have stayed because they care! Furthermore, the Italian teacher is the same teacher who started the program. Students engaged in active learning may seem out of control but real learning is occuring....children learn by doing, not always being lectured to as they sit with hands folded. Gesu rocks!

I agree with the reader who stated that the bar is set low. The school has achievers that are reflective of the parents not the school. There are numerous classes that are truly out of control. Yes, they have had foreign languages classes, but the teachers change from month to month. In addition there are a select group of students who are portrayed in a positive light while others are left behind to fend for themselves. In fairness not all of the teachers are the sames there are some teachers who came with the bricks that are vested. But for the most part it is a joke. You will see nothing but great comments about GESU because trust me they are paying for the grades. But the kids aren't really learning alot based on the poor curriculum. From year to year the extracurricular staff change. Can anyone say 'Got Honesty'!

The quality of academic programs at Gesu is very high. The school has replaced Reading, Science, Social Studies and is planning on replacing Math books this coming school year. A new curriculum program is in place with all state and national standards accounted for. As for parental involvement, all parents must provide at least 15 service hours each school year. In addition, the ONLY fundraiser the school did last year was the Gesu Academic Learning Auction which had 95% parent involvement and raised more than $28,500 in one exceptional evening! Students are offered music, physical education, computers, library, art, Spanish and Italian on a weekly basis and have the opportunity to participate in creative writing, dance, girl scouts, basketball, volleyball and drama in after school activities. Community and parent involvment is at an all time high with nearby university, high school students and neighborhood and parish members volunteering daily. Great school!

My son has been attending Gesu School since preschool. He is an honor student and has scored very high on his yearly standardized Iowa achievement tests. This past school year, he scored in the 80th and 90th percentiles for almost every subject. I am very pleased with the academic programs provided at the school and see that the principal and staff are currently working on 'upping' the standards even more with new textbook series and a standards based curriculum program for all the classrooms. My son has been fortunate to have been exposed to the Spanish and Italian languages for the last few years as well as a wonderful computer program which has him making power point presentations and he's not even 10 years old! He knows more about computers than we do! I am pleased to note that parental involvement at the school is extensive. the school has a real 'family' atmosphere.

The quality of academic programs at Gesu is poor to say the least. All of the students appear to perform above bar but that is because the bar is set at a casket level. Gesu is concerned with money not quality. The tuition increases every year and the quality of education decreases. Yes I was happy to see my children recieve outstanding report cards. However, upon closer examination I discovered that they were being given work which was way below there level. Hence all students end up being high achievers. I don't want the appearance of a high achiever I want a high achiever. Invest your money elsewhere this school is only a show. Go with a quality education that your child will be able to utilize in the real world when they aren't being stroked. Parent involvement is moderate and extracurricular activities are as well.

My daughter will be entering second grade in the fall and has grown so much since kindergarten. The two teachers our family has encoutered have been wonderful and consistent with the students. Gesu is very family-oriented and small enough that the children all know each other and act as a family. The new curriculum is proving to be outstanding. Above all, the school is SAFE! There are extra-curricular activities that all grades can get involved in. Overall my short journey has been great and I am the proud parent of a first honor student who is eager to learn and go to school everyday. Parent involvement is a requirement if you want your child to succeed and the school expects 100% cooperation with this endeavor. I recommend going to an open house to find out more or calling the school to stop in for a visit.

Very high teacher turnover. Several of the teachers do not have strong control or good classroom management skills.
