Colin Powell Academy Reviews

I hated this school for my child, she went in doing good and came out doing terrible. You would think most of the staff was in middle school theselves.

I am very pleased with my child grades. My sons grades has improve since they spent the extra time to help him. They have a wonderful tutoring program that he was enrolled in.

I am completely dissatisfied with colin powell academy. My son went from a 3.0 Student to a 1.2 .. I was told by the teachers who's class he was felling that they dont have time to contact parents. They send progress reports home but its only extra credit if its brung back. My son will not be attending next fall

As a parent I am very satisfied with the staff and education that my child is receiving from CPA. The staff seems to be very knowledgeable from many aspects of dealing with the students. As a visitor in the school I witnessed the students to be very mannered and well behaved. I was concerned with my child learning abilities and without any problems I was given many choices to help me with my concerns. I recommend this school for any parent who want to send their student in an environment that is very disciplined and focused on helping your child succeed for their future.

Colin Powell Academy is an excellent school. They offer many extras you can't find anywhere else in the city, such as Boys to Men, Sister to Sister, and a Life Skills program. These extras prove the school not only cares about our kids academically, but emotionally as well. These programs give kids the additional information and support they need to grow into successful adults. This academy grows and improves each year which demonstrates their commitment to educating each child.

Colin Powell Academy is a top rate charter school in Michigan. It promotes a safe, friendly, and positive learning environment. As a teacher at CPA I am confident that your child will get an education that is equal or better than any other school in Michigan. We are dedicated to excellence in every students education!

Colin Powell Academy educates the total student. Our academy is not only concerned with the educational advancement but we educate the entire student socially and emotionally. It is our goal for each student to be a productive member of society. Our staff is well read, knowledgeable and readily accepts suggestions and comments that will assist us in nurturing our students to develop positively. -Teacher Assistant-

This is my first year teaching at Colin Powell Academy. As a music educator with over 20 years of certified experience, I have found Colin Powell Academy to be one of the finest public charter schools in southeast Michigan. The administration and staff are extremely highly qualified, certified by the state, and very, very caring. It angers me when uninformed individuals, like former DPS superintendent William Coleman, make blanket statements about what charter schools do not have. I teach general music, band, choir, and drumline everyday at CPA. We have an excellent music education program, art program, Spanish program, sports teams, and cheerleading. We have a student staffed bookstore and other extra-curricular activities, plus after-school tutoring. In Metro-Detroit, you cannot go wrong with CPA!

Under Mr. Waters leadership (former principal), Colin Powell Academy was wonderful, he was a very informative and fair administrator, he had a way of defusing situations and making sure both sides felt like winners. I have 3 children that attended CPA and overall I am happy with their education. I have learned that Mr. Waters has since moved on to other things, this saddens me but I am willing to give the new principal a chance. I hope that he/she has the same commitment to students and education that Mr. Water had. The staff at times would try to overlook my children's concerns or unfairly grade my children, and this is when it is important to be an active parent, once any staff sees that you are concerned about your children they make it a point to provide your child with the attention that they need. Parents must be involved.

I think this is one of the worst schools in Detroit. The staff keeps changing and they never have a consistant principal. The teachers show favoritism towards certain students and the courses are watered down. They are very lax when it comes to teaching students. Staff have a 'I don't care' attitude. My daughter has attended this school for 3 years and there has been at least 4 different principals. I strongly reccomend you do not send your child to this mess of a school.

I believe CPA is a fantastic place for students to grow. Class sizes are limited and the teachers work harder for students here than any other place in the area. The administration is consistant in its efforts and the teachers continue to make positive strides with the student body. The teachers are all firm but incredibly fair. There are more rules for students and parents to follow but this only demonstrates the higher standard CPA is achieving. This is definately the school for parents who have talented children that may be getting lost in the DPS shuffle. CPA is also a must for the parent who wants to get involved with action and not words because parents are the REAL backbone of this school. Parent involvement is on the rise and so is Colin Powell Academy.

My son went to this school from grades 4-8 and I feel very guilty about it. I do not think he was serviced properly. The staff kept changing. Once he got to High School lots of gaps in his learning were exposed. I didn't move him because I kept thinking 'next year it will be better' since he began the second year of the schools existence. Sad to say, I regret sending him there and I would not recommend this school to anyone. Especially students that are 'hands on' type of learners. I wish I would have moved him to a different school as soon as I noticed he was slipping through the cracks. I gave the school a chance instead of him. Parents, please do not do this!

As Vice President of the PCSO (Parent) Committee, With the parents, students, teachers and administration working together to make Colin Powell based on community, education and families. I recommend Colin Powell to any family moving or living in the Metro Detroit Area. The school definitely lives up to the Secretary of Defense's name.
