Channel 72: Beyond Jazz The Spirit Jazz Project walks a dangerous musical tightrope without falling off. Lean one way, and a precipice is waiting for bands specializing in fusion. Go the other and join straight-ahead bands with fewer fans. But Spirit manages to stay aloft by presenting music with a contemporary sound and solid performance. -Bob Karlovits, Jazz Writer Pittsburgh Tribune Review POSTMODERN FUSION: "After Modern Era Jazz Rock Hybrid". Musical style that has elements of jazz and rock as its basis, but takes a different approach by seeking a higher level of connectivity with the listener. Postmodern in that it is one possible next step on the path created by modern greats. Actually, and perhaps more precisely, "postmodern" because it takes a look at the best things about the fusion genre, and combines these with what seems most important about music in the first place. This new genre (subgenre) is achieved by avoiding pretentiousness sometimes associated with jazz, and getting to the core concepts that listeners care about: HONEST PURPOSED, HIGH QUALITY MELODY, WITH A GOOD GROOVE!! It's "Blue Collar Bebop". Read on. Where is jazz going? Where is fusion going? What's the next step? And why can't it be melodic, dang it?!? Spirit Jazz Project a progressive trio from southwestern PA that really wants the listener to be a part of the program! No stuffed shirts, just regular guys with a different vision. "This music is bebop, but with a blue collar." Thank you Pittsburgh for helping to spread the word about our music! The album "SquarePeg" is RELEASED and we couldn't have done it without your support over the past several years!! Worldwide on iTunes!!!! Pittsburgh has some of the nicest and most sincere people on the planet. We have had the fortunate opportunity to work with many of them in putting this collection of songs together. This album was a bit of a gamble for us, but you are making it worthwhile. Special thanks to Soundscape Studios in McKeesport, PA and the amazing Doug Kasper. Also a special thanks to Exclamation Labs for the excellent website. SJP started as a strictly standards jazz trio that played the private sector, but has expanded to the point that we are able to create our own music as well. Beyond straight ahead jazz, but still with a respectful nod. Thanks for helping us with websites, posting places, forums, gigs, contacts, and all the rest. Thank you for contacting your favorite stations and asking them to spin our tunes. It works!! Your suggestions are very much appreciated. Please continue to send them via the band's website. They are very helpful. The questions we always ask: Does the music connect with you? Can you remember the melody after the show, or after the car ride? Did the music touch something in your soul? Did it take you to another place? These are questions we looked at seriously. These songs are handcrafted American music. Some are Biblical and spiritual in nature All relate to human experience. Real music for real people! Have a listen and see for yourself. There are other clips on our website. Thanks for allowing us to be part of the family. XM SATELLITE RADIO UPDATE: Special thanks to Michelle Sammartino and all the folks at Channel 72: "Beyond Jazz" for giving us the opportunity to be heard by many.
