Penn Brewery: Pittsburgh's Favorite Micobrewery
Perhaps Pennsylvania's most famous microbrewery, Penn Brewery is certainly a Pittsburgh favorite. Penn brews up German-style beers in a copper brewhouse that was actually imported from Germany. Whether you like pale ales or dark stouts, Penn Brewery has a brew for you.
Some of the most popular beers produced by Penn Brewery include the famous Penn Pilsner-- an amber lager that is smooth and full-bodied; the Penn Dark Lager-- a full-bodied, slightly-bitter dark lager made with black malt; the Penn Weizen-- a Bavarian wheat beer with hints of clove and banana; Penn Marze-- an amber-red lager made with several roasted malts; and St. Nikolaus Bock-- a spicy Christmas brew that is popular in the wintertime.
Guests can join the Penn Brewery for Growlers Hours each Friday night, when patrons can bring their own "growlers" (64-ounce beer-transport jugs) to Penn Brewery and take home their favorite brews fresh from the brewhouse. Patrons can sit back and enjoy freshly-created ales, stouts and other Penn Brewery notables for just $3 a pint, plus take home their personal faves. Bring in your own growler to take the beers home, or buy one from Penn Brewery for just $5. Fill as many growlers as you like for just $10 each. Growlers hours are from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Friday evening in the old Penn Brewery Restaurant. For more information on Penn Brewery "growlers hours", click here.
The famous Penn Brewery Restaurant was closed in August of 2009, but the owners are actively searching for a new place to reopen it due to an outpouring of support. Plans haven't been set in concrete, although Penn Brewery's website will offer updates as they become available.
