Recently opened in September of 2009, The August Wilson Center for African-American Culture is a 65,000 square-foot architectural delight that celebrates African-American history, life and culture. A home to the arts, The August Wilson Center's 486-seat theater hosts an array of events from musicians to dance acts to plays.

Named after the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, August Wilson grew up just a few miles from the site in which the center is located. Wilson's works included the ten-play series "The Pittsburgh Cycle", "Fences" and "The Piano Lesson", among others.

The August Wilson Center celebrates the achievements of African Americans in all aspects of life, including athletics, music, dance, theater, business and science, according to the Center's website. Formerly the African-American Cultural Center of Greater Pittsburgh, the August Wilson Center works to "foster a mutual understanding and appreciation rooted in the values and ideals that drive the evolution of dynamic cultures worldwide."

In addition to the theater and many exhibition galleries, the August Wilson Center is home to a Music Cafe that features authentic African food and live music from some of Pittsburgh's most notable African-American performers. Classrooms, a gift store and banquet areas are also located on the campus.
